lost home - in collaboration with Minh Tam

Both of us, Tâm and Kiệt, have a house that we cannot return to - one was sold away and one reconstructed, but we were left with no photographs of it. Even as we come back and photograph the existing infrastructure, it could never feel the same. Opening and turning the crinkly plastic pages of the family albums are familiar to us, shaping the inseparable link between photography and memory.

We would like to upturn the association between the photographed and the physically present to capture instead what is no longer there - our lost homes. With 8 participants who share a story of lost home - a place of no return in any way, we recollect memories and represent them through sensory feelings in their daily lives. To contextualize the unrepresentable lost space, we use a large white backdrop to materialize the idea of loss and distort currently available spaces. The disturbing whiteness is empty but also has the potential for imagination, and with the over-exposed photographs, evokes dreaminess and unreality.
